I Don’t Know What to Title Something Like This

Wednesday afternoon, I washed the winter dust and spring pollen from the kayak, preparing for a trip to Murrell’s Inlet with the Body Challenge, Spirit Challenge group. But I won’t be going. A young man died from head injuries received in a motorcycle accident, and I’m pastorally involved. He was 22, and his grandparents are my church members. The rest of the family is without a church, so I’m there. It is the work of faith to stand in the presence of answerless questions and honor God’s pain. Quietly and loudly, we do.

  1. Your last line (Quietly and loudly, we do.) speaks volumes.

It’s an infinite spectrum between the two. Sometimes the need is obvious, and is either quiet or loud. Most often it is not so obvious, and is somewhere in between.

Maybe that’s part of the spiritual journey, learning when to be loud, when to be quiet, and when to be in between.

    Response from Steve:
Hi, Jeff. Thanks for your thoughts. I think you’re right.

  2. Well said, as always. Interesting but sad twist to your story but it shows your dedication and that you do what is right, even when it might not be what you had in mind. Hope you get in the water soon!

    Response from Steve:
Hi, Lynne. I do hope to paddle again, soon, too. The church schedule has been overly full this spring, but that’s some of the evidence of growth in that realm.
